           PrinceVasíli’swordsfrightenedher,anembitteredlookcloudedheroncehandsomeface,butonlyforamoment;thenshesmiledagainandclutchedPrinceVasíli’sarmmoretightly.

           “Listentome,Prince,”saidshe.“IhaveneveryetaskedyouforanythingandIneverwillagain,norhaveIeverremindedyouofmyfather’sfriendshipforyou;butnowIentreatyouforGod’ssaketodothisformyson—andIshallalwaysregardyouasabenefactor,”sheaddedhurriedly.“No,don’tbeangry,butpromise!IhaveaskedGolítsynandhehasrefused.Bethekindheartedmanyoualwayswere,”shesaid,tryingtosmilethoughtearswereinhereyes.
