           OnKutúzov’sstaff,amonghisfellowofficersandinthearmygenerally,PrinceAndrewhad,ashehadhadinPetersburgsociety,twoquiteoppositereputations.Some,aminority,acknowledgedhimtobedifferentfromthemselvesandfromeveryoneelse,expectedgreatthingsofhim,listenedtohim,admired,andimitatedhim,andwiththemPrinceAndrewwasnaturalandpleasant.Others,themajority,dislikedhimandconsideredhimconceited,cold,anddisagreeable.ButamongthesepeoplePrinceAndrewknewhowtotakehisstandsothattheyrespectedandevenfearedhim.

           ComingoutofKutúzov’sroomintothewaitingroomwiththepapersinhishandPrinceAndrewcameuptohiscomrade,theaide-de-camponduty,Kozlóvski,whowassittingatthewindowwithabook.

           “Well,Prince?”askedKozlóvski.

           “Iamorderedtowriteamemorandumexplainingwhywearenotadvancing.”

           “Andwhyisit?”

           PrinceAndrewshruggedhisshoulders.

           “AnynewsfromMack?”

           “No.”

           “Ifitweretruethathehasbeenbeaten,newswouldhavecome.”

           “Probably,”saidPrinceAndrewmovingtowardtheouterdoor.

           ButatthatinstantatallAustriangeneralinagreatcoat,withtheorderofMariaTheresaonhisneckandablackbandageroundhishead,whohadevidentlyjustarrived,enteredquickly,slammingthedoor.PrinceAndrewstoppedshort.

           “CommanderinChiefKutúzov?”saidthenewlyarrivedgeneralspeakingquicklywithaharshGermanaccent,lookingtobothsidesandadvancingstraighttowardtheinnerdoor.
