           Theinvadersflee,turnback,fleeagain,andallthechancesarenownotforNapoleonbutalwaysagainsthim.

           Acountermovementisthenaccomplishedfromeasttowestwitharemarkableresemblancetotheprecedingmovementfromwesttoeast.Attempteddrivesfromeasttowest—similartothecontrarymovementsof1805,1807,and1809—precedethegreatwestwardmovement;thereisthesamecoalescenceintoagroupofenormousdimensions;thesameadhesionofthepeopleofCentralEuropetothemovement;thesamehesitationmidway,andthesameincreasingrapidityasthegoalisapproached.

           Paris,theultimategoal,isreached.TheNapoleonicgovernmentandarmyaredestroyed.Napoleonhimselfisnolongerofanyaccount;allhisactionsareevidentlypitifulandmean,butagainaninexplicablechanceoccurs.ThealliesdetestNapoleonwhomtheyregardasthecauseoftheirsufferings
