           Theprincess,whohadneverlikedPierreandhadbeenparticularlyhostiletohimsinceshehadfeltherselfunderobligationstohimaftertheoldcount’sdeath,nowafterstayingashorttimeinOrël—whereshehadcomeintendingtoshowPierrethatinspiteofhisingratitudesheconsidereditherdutytonursehim—felttohersurpriseandvexationthatshehadbecomefondofhim.Pierredidnotinanywayseekherapproval,hemerelystudiedherwithinterest.Formerlyshehadfeltthatheregardedherwithindifferenceandirony,andsohadshrunkintoherselfasshedidwithothersandhadshownhimonlythecombativesideofhernature;butnowheseemedtobetryingtounderstandthemostintimateplacesofherheart,and,mistrustfullyatfirstbutafterwardsgratefully,shelethimseethehidden,kindlysidesofhercharacter.
