           Thefarthertheyfledthemorewretchedbecametheplightoftheremnant,especiallyaftertheBerëzina,onwhich(inconsequenceofthePetersburgplan)specialhopeshadbeenplacedbytheRussians,andthekeenergrewthepassionsoftheRussiancommanders,whoblamedoneanotherandKutúzovmostofall.AnticipationthatthefailureofthePetersburgBerëzinaplanwouldbeattributedtoKutúzovledtodissatisfaction,contempt,andridicule,moreandmorestronglyexpressed.Theridiculeandcontemptwereofcourseexpressedinarespectfulform,makingitimpossibleforhimtoaskwhereinhewastoblame.Theydidnottalkseriouslytohim;whenreportingtohimoraskingforhissanctiontheyappearedtobefulfillingaregrettableformality,buttheywinkedbehindhisbackandtriedtomisleadhimateveryturn.

           Becausetheycouldnotunderstandhimallthesepeopleassumedthatitwasuselesstotalktotheoldman;thathewouldnevergrasptheprofundityoftheirplans,thathewouldanswerwithhisphrases(whichtheythoughtweremerephrases)abouta“goldenbridge,”abouttheimpossibilityofcrossingthefrontierwithacrowdoftatterdemalions,andsoforth.Theyhadheardallthatbefore.Andallhesaid—thatitwasnecessarytoawaitprovisions,orthatthemenhadnoboots—wassosimple,whilewhattheyproposedwassocomplicatedandclever,thatitwasevidentthathewasoldandstupidandthatthey,thoughnotinpower,werecommandersofgenius.
