           OneafternoonnoticingNatáshashiveringwithfever,PrincessMarytookhertoherownroomandmadeherliedownonthebed.Natáshalaydown,butwhenPrincessMaryhaddrawntheblindsandwasgoingawayshecalledherback.

           “Idon’twanttosleep,Mary,sitbymealittle.”

           “Youaretired—trytosleep.”

           “No,no.Whydidyoubringmeaway?Shewillbeaskingforme.”

           “Sheismuchbetter.Shespokesowelltoday,”saidPrincessMary.

           NatáshalayonthebedandinthesemidarknessoftheroomscannedPrincessMary’sface.

           “Isshelikehim?”thoughtNatásha.“Yes,likeandyetnotlike.Butsheisquiteoriginal,strange,new,andunknown.Andshelovesme.Whatisinherheart?Allthatisgood.Buthow?Whatishermindlike?Whatdoesshethinkaboutme?Yes,sheissplendid!”

           “Mary,”shesaidtimidly,drawingPrincessMary’shandtoherself,“Mary,youmustn’tthinkmewicked.No?Marydarling,howIloveyou!Letusbequite,quitefriends.”

           AndNatásha,embracingher,begankissingherfaceandhands,makingPrincessMaryfeelshybuthappybythisdemonstrationofherfeelings.

           FromthatdayatenderandpassionatefriendshipsuchasexistsonlybetweenwomenwasestablishedbetweenPrincessMaryandNatásha.Theywerecontinuallykissingandsayingtenderthingstooneanotherandspentmostoftheirtimetogether.Whenonewentouttheotherbecamerestlessandhastenedtorejoinher.Togethertheyfeltmoreinharmonywithoneanotherthaneitherofthemfeltwithherselfwhenalone.
