           Scarcelyaquarterofthesoldiersremainwiththestandardsoftheirregiments,theothersgooffbythemselvesindifferentdirectionshopingtofindfoodandescapediscipline.IngeneraltheyregardSmolénskastheplacewheretheyhopetorecover.Duringthelastfewdaysmanyofthemenhavebeenseentothrowawaytheircartridgesandtheirarms.Insuchastateofaffairs,whateveryourultimateplansmaybe,theinterestofYourMajesty’sservicedemandsthatthearmyshouldberalliedatSmolénskandshouldfirstofallbefreedfromineffectives,suchasdismountedcavalry,unnecessarybaggage,andartillerymaterialthatisnolongerinproportiontothepresentforces.Thesoldiers,whoarewornoutwithhungerandfatigue,needthesesuppliesaswellasafewdays’rest.Manyhavediedtheselastdaysontheroadoratthebivouacs.Thisstateofthingsiscontinuallybecomingworseandmakesonefearthatunlessapromptremedyisappliedthetroopswillnolongerbeundercontrolincaseofanengagement.
