           ButDólokhovrestartedtheconversationwhichhaddroppedandbeganputtingdirectquestionsastohowmanymentherewereinthebattalion,howmanybattalions,andhowmanyprisoners.AskingabouttheRussianprisonerswiththatdetachment,Dólokhovsaid:

           “Ahorridbusinessdraggingthesecorpsesaboutwithone!Itwouldbebettertoshootsuchrabble,”andburstintoloudlaughter,sostrangethatPétyathoughttheFrenchwouldimmediatelydetecttheirdisguise,andinvoluntarilytookastepbackfromthecampfire.

           NoonerepliedawordtoDólokhov’slaughter,andaFrenchofficerwhomtheycouldnotsee(helaywrappedinagreatcoat)roseandwhisperedsomethingtoacompanion.Dólokhovgotupandcalledtothesoldierwhowasholdingtheirhorses.

           “Willtheybringourhorsesornot?”thoughtPétya,instinctivelydrawingnearertoDólokhov.

           Thehorseswerebrought.

           “Goodevening,gentlemen,”saidDólokhov.

           Pétyawishedtosay“Goodnight”butcouldnotutteraword.Theofficerswerewhisperingtogether.Dólokhovwasalongtimemountinghishorsewhichwouldnotstandstill,thenherodeoutoftheyardatafootpace.Pétyarodebesidehim,longingtolookroundtoseewhetherornottheFrenchwererunningafterthem,butnotdaringto.

           ComingoutontotheroadDólokhovdidnotridebackacrosstheopencountry,butthroughthevillage.Atonespothestoppedandlistened.“Doyouhear?”heasked.PétyarecognizedthesoundofRussianvoicesandsawthedarkfiguresofRussianprisonersroundtheircampfires
