           Andwithoutwaitingforananswerfromthesentinel,whohadsteppedaside,Dólokhovrodeuptheinclineatawalk.

           Noticingtheblackoutlineofamancrossingtheroad,Dólokhovstoppedhimandinquiredwherethecommanderandofficerswere.Theman,asoldierwithasackoverhisshoulder,stopped,camecloseuptoDólokhov’shorse,toucheditwithhishand,andexplainedsimplyandinafriendlywaythatthecommanderandtheofficerswerehigherupthehilltotherightinthecourtyardofthefarm,ashecalledthelandowner’shouse.

           Havingriddenuptheroad,onbothsidesofwhichFrenchtalkcouldbeheardaroundthecampfires,Dólokhovturnedintothecourtyardofthelandowner’shouse.Havingriddenin,hedismountedandapproachedabigblazingcampfire,aroundwhichsatseveralmentalkingnoisily.Somethingwasboilinginasmallcauldronattheedgeofthefireandasoldierinapeakedcapandblueovercoat,litupbythefire,waskneelingbesideitstirringitscontentswitharamrod.

           “Oh,he’sahardnuttocrack,”saidoneoftheofficerswhowassittingintheshadowattheothersideofthefire.

           “He’llmakethemgetamoveon,thosefellows!”saidanother,laughing.

           Bothfellsilent,peeringoutthroughthedarknessatthesoundofDólokhov’sandPétya’sstepsastheyadvancedtothefireleadingtheirhorses.

           “Bonjour,messieurs!”*saidDólokhovloudlyandclearly.

           *“Goodday,gentlemen.”

           Therewasastiramongtheofficersintheshadowbeyondthefire,andonetall,long-neckedofficer,walkingroundthefire,cameuptoDólokhov.
