           ButwhenhesawtheFrenchandsawTíkhonandlearnedthattherewouldcertainlybeanattackthatnight,hedecided,withtherapiditywithwhichyoungpeoplechangetheirviews,thatthegeneral,whomhehadgreatlyrespectedtillthen,wasarubbishyGerman,thatDenísovwasahero,theesaulahero,andTíkhonaherotoo,andthatitwouldbeshamefulforhimtoleavethematamomentofdifficulty.

           Sittingattablewiththeofficersandtearingthefatsavorymuttonwithhishands,downwhichthegreasetrickled,Pétyawasinanecstaticchildishstateofloveforallmen,andconsequentlyofconfidencethatotherslovedhiminthesameway.

           “Sothenwhatdoyouthink,VasíliDmítrich?”saidhetoDenísov.
