           Theboy,thrustinghiscoldhandsintohispocketsandliftinghiseyebrows,lookedatDenísovinaffright,butinspiteofanevidentdesiretosayallheknewgaveconfusedanswers,merelyassentingtoeverythingDenísovaskedhim.Denísovturnedawayfromhimfrowningandaddressedtheesaul,conveyinghisownconjecturestohim.

           Pétya,rapidlyturninghishead,lookednowatthedrummerboy,nowatDenísov,nowattheesaul,andnowattheFrenchinthevillageandalongtheroad,tryingnottomissanythingofimportance.

           “WhetherDólokhovcomesornot,wemustseizeit,eh?”saidDenísovwithamerrysparkleinhiseyes.

           “Itisaverysuitablespot,”saidtheesaul.

           “Thehollowisimpassable—there’saswampthere,”saidtheesaul.“Thehorseswouldsink.Wemustrideroundmoretotheleft....”

           Whiletheyweretalkinginundertonesthecrackofashotsoundedfromthelowgroundbythepond,apuffofwhitesmokeappeared,thenanother,andthesoundofhundredsofseeminglymerryFrenchvoicesshoutingtogethercameupfromtheslope.ForamomentDenísovandtheesauldrewback.Theyweresonearthattheythoughttheywerethecauseofthefiringandshouting.Butthefiringandshoutingdidnotrelatetothem.Downbelow,amanwearingsomethingredwasrunningthroughthemarsh.
