           DuringthehourPierrewatchedthemtheyallcameflowingfromthedifferentstreetswithoneandthesamedesiretogetonquickly;theyalljostledoneanother,begantogrowangryandtofight,whiteteethgleamed,browsfrowned,everthesamewordsofabuseflewfromsidetoside,andallthefacesborethesameswaggeringlyresoluteandcoldlycruelexpressionthathadstruckPierrethatmorningonthecorporal’sfacewhenthedrumswerebeating.

           Itwasnottillnearlyeveningthattheofficercommandingtheescortcollectedhismenandwithshoutsandquarrelsforcedhiswayinamongthebaggagetrains,andtheprisoners,hemmedinonallsides,emergedontotheKalúgaroad.

           Theymarchedveryquickly,withoutresting,andhaltedonlywhenthesunbegantoset.Thebaggagecartsdrewupclosetogetherandthemenbegantopreparefortheirnight’srest.Theyallappearedangryanddissatisfied.Foralongtime,oaths,angryshouts,andfightingcouldbeheardfromallsides.Acarriagethatfollowedtheescortranintooneofthecartsandknockedaholeinitwithitspole.Severalsoldiersrantowardthecartfromdifferentsides:somebeatthecarriagehorsesontheirheads,turningthemaside,othersfoughtamongthemselves,andPierresawthatoneGermanwasbadlywoundedontheheadbyasword.

           Itseemedthatallthesemen,nowthattheyhadstoppedamidfieldsinthechillduskoftheautumnevening,experiencedoneandthesamefeelingofunpleasantawakeningfromthehurryandeagernesstopushonthathadseizedthematthestart.
