           Inviewofallthisinformation,whentheenemyhasscatteredhisforcesinlargedetachments,andwithNapoleonandhisGuardsinMoscow,isitpossiblethattheenemy’sforcesconfrontingyouaresoconsiderableasnottoallowofyourtakingtheoffensive?Onthecontrary,heisprobablypursuingyouwithdetachments,oratmostwithanarmycorpsmuchweakerthanthearmyentrustedtoyou.Itwouldseemthat,availingyourselfofthesecircumstances,youmightadvantageouslyattackaweakeroneandannihilatehim,oratleastobligehimtoretreat,retaininginourhandsanimportantpartoftheprovincesnowoccupiedbytheenemy,andtherebyavertingdangerfromTúlaandothertownsintheinterior.YouwillberesponsibleiftheenemyisabletodirectaforceofanysizeagainstPetersburgtothreatenthiscapitalinwhichithasnotbeenpossibletoretainmanytroops;forwiththearmyentrustedtoyou,andactingwithresolutionandenergy,youhaveamplemeanstoavertthisfreshcalamity.RememberthatyouhavestilltoanswertoouroffendedcountryforthelossofMoscow.Youhaveexperiencedmyreadinesstorewardyou.Thatreadinesswillnotweakeninme,butIandRussiahavearighttoexpectfromyouallthezeal,firmness,andsuccesswhichyourintellect,militarytalent,andthecourageofthetroopsyoucommandjustifyusinexpecting.

           Butbythetimethisletter,whichprovedthattherealrelationoftheforceshadalreadymadeitselffeltinPetersburg,wasdispatched,Kutúzovhadfoundhimselfunableanylongertorestrainthearmyhecommandedfromattackingandabattlehadtakenplace.
