           OnhearingthatsoundNatáshaputdownthestocking,leanednearertohim,andsuddenly,noticinghisshiningeyes,steppedlightlyuptohimandbentoverhim.

           “Youarenotasleep?”

           “No,Ihavebeenlookingatyoualongtime.Ifeltyoucomein.Nooneelsegivesmethatsenseofsofttranquillitythatyoudo...thatlight.Iwanttoweepforjoy.”

           Natáshadrewclosertohim.Herfaceshonewithrapturousjoy.

           “Natásha,Iloveyoutoomuch!Morethananythingintheworld.”

           “AndI!”—Sheturnedawayforaninstant.“Whytoomuch?”sheasked.

           “Whytoomuch?...Well,whatdoyou,whatdoyoufeelinyoursoul,yourwholesoul—shallIlive?Whatdoyouthink?”

           “Iamsureofit,sure!”Natáshaalmostshouted,takingholdofbothhishandswithapassionatemovement.

           Heremainedsilentawhile.

           “Howgooditwouldbe!”andtakingherhandhekissedit.

           Natáshafelthappyandagitated,butatoncerememberedthatthiswouldnotdoandthathehadtobequiet.

           “Butyouhavenotslept,”shesaid,repressingherjoy.“Trytosleep...please!”

           Hepressedherhandandreleasedit,andshewentbacktothecandleandsatdownagaininherformerposition.Twicesheturnedandlookedathim,andhereyesmethisbeamingather.Shesetherselfataskonherstockingandresolvednottoturnroundtillitwasfinished.

           Soonhereallyshuthiseyesandfellasleep.Hedidnotsleeplongandsuddenlyawokewithastartandinacoldperspiration.

           Ashefellasleephehadstillbeenthinkingofthesubjectthatnowalwaysoccupiedhismind—aboutlifeanddeath,andchieflyaboutdeath.
