           TearsofvexationshowedthemselvesinPrincessMary’seyes.Sheturnedawayandwasabouttoaskthecountessagainhowtogotohim,whenlight,impetuous,andseeminglybuoyantstepswereheardatthedoor.TheprincesslookedroundandsawNatáshacomingin,almostrunning—thatNatáshawhomshehadlikedsolittleattheirmeetinginMoscowlongsince.

           ButhardlyhadtheprincesslookedatNatásha’sfacebeforesherealizedthatherewasarealcomradeinhergrief,andconsequentlyafriend.Sherantomeether,embracedher,andbegantocryonhershoulder.

           AssoonasNatásha,sittingattheheadofPrinceAndrew’sbed,heardofPrincessMary’sarrival,shesoftlylefthisroomandhastenedtoherwiththoseswiftstepsthathadsoundedbuoyanttoPrincessMary.

           Therewasonlyoneexpressiononheragitatedfacewhensheranintothedrawingroom—thatoflove—boundlessloveforhim,forher,andforallthatwasneartothemansheloved;andofpity,sufferingforothers,andpassionatedesiretogiveherselfentirelytohelpingthem.ItwasplainthatatthatmomenttherewasinNatásha’sheartnothoughtofherselforofherownrelationswithPrinceAndrew.
