           HadhebeenaskedwhathethoughtofthestateofRussia,hewouldhavesaidthatitwasnothisbusinesstothinkaboutit,thatKutúzovandotherswerethereforthatpurpose,butthathehadheardthattheregimentsweretobemadeuptotheirfullstrength,thatfightingwouldprobablygoonforalongtimeyet,andthatthingsbeingsoitwasquitelikelyhemightbeincommandofaregimentinacoupleofyears’time.

           Ashelookedatthematterinthisway,helearnedthathewasbeingsenttoVorónezhtobuyremountsforhisdivision,notonlywithoutregretatbeingpreventedfromtakingpartinthecomingbattle,butwiththegreatestpleasure—whichhedidnotconcealandwhichhiscomradesfullyunderstood.

           AfewdaysbeforethebattleofBorodinó,Nicholasreceivedthenecessarymoneyandwarrants,andhavingsentsomehussarsoninadvance,hesetoutwithposthorsesforVorónezh.

           Onlyamanwhohasexperiencedit—thatis,haspassedsomemonthscontinuouslyinanatmosphereofcampaigningandwar—canunderstandthedelightNicholasfeltwhenheescapedfromtheregioncoveredbythearmy’sforagingoperations,provisiontrains,andhospitals.When—freefromsoldiers,wagons,andthefilthytracesofacamp—hesawvillageswithpeasantsandpeasantwomen,gentlemen’scountryhouses,fieldswherecattleweregrazing,posthouseswithstationmastersasleepinthem,herejoicedasthoughseeingallthisforthefirsttime.
