           SoonafterthatNatáshaheardhermother’sevenbreathing.Natáshadidnotmove,thoughherlittlebarefoot,thrustoutfromunderthequilt,wasgrowingcoldonthebarefloor.

           Asiftocelebrateavictoryovereverybody,acricketchirpedinacrackinthewall.Acockcrowedfaroffandanotherrepliednearby.Theshoutinginthetavernhaddieddown;onlythemoaningoftheadjutantwasheard.Natáshasatup.

           “Sónya,areyouasleep?Mamma?”shewhispered.

           FromthemomentshehadbeentoldthatmorningofPrinceAndrew’swoundandhispresencethere,Natáshahadresolvedtoseehim.
