           SometalkedabouttheMoscowmilitiawhich,precededbytheclergy,wouldgototheThreeHills;otherswhisperedthatAugustinhadbeenforbiddentoleave,thattraitorshadbeenseized,thatthepeasantswereriotingandrobbingpeopleontheirwayfromMoscow,andsoon.Butallthiswasonlytalk;inreality(thoughtheCouncilofFilí,atwhichitwasdecidedtoabandonMoscow,hadnotyetbeenheld)boththosewhowentawayandthosewhoremainedbehindfelt,thoughtheydidnotshowit,thatMoscowwouldcertainlybeabandoned,andthattheyoughttogetawayasquicklyaspossibleandsavetheirbelongings.Itwasfeltthateverythingwouldsuddenlybreakupandchange,butuptothefirstofSeptembernothinghaddoneso.Asacriminalwhoisbeingledtoexecutionknowsthathemustdieimmediately,butyetlooksabouthimandstraightensthecapthatisawryonhishead,soMoscowinvoluntarilycontinueditswontedlife,thoughitknewthatthetimeofitsdestructionwasnearwhentheconditionsoflifetowhichitspeoplewereaccustomedtosubmitwouldbecompletelyupset.

           DuringthethreedaysprecedingtheoccupationofMoscowthewholeRostóvfamilywasabsorbedinvariousactivities.Theheadofthefamily,CountIlyáRostóv,continuallydroveaboutthecitycollectingthecurrentrumorsfromallsidesandgavesuperficialandhastyordersathomeaboutthepreparationsfortheirdeparture.
