           Whenhecametohimselfthesplinteredportionsofhisthighbonehadbeenextracted,thetornfleshcutaway,andthewoundbandaged.Waterwasbeingsprinkledonhisface.AssoonasPrinceAndrewopenedhiseyes,thedoctorbentover,kissedhimsilentlyonthelips,andhurriedaway.

           Afterthesufferingshehadbeenenduring,PrinceAndrewenjoyedablissfulfeelingsuchashehadnotexperiencedforalongtime.Allthebestandhappiestmomentsofhislife—especiallyhisearliestchildhood,whenheusedtobeundressedandputtobed,andwhenleaningoverhimhisnursesanghimtosleepandhe,buryinghisheadinthepillow,felthappyinthemereconsciousnessoflife—returnedtohismemory,notmerelyassomethingpastbutassomethingpresent.

           ThedoctorswerebusilyengagedwiththewoundedmantheshapeofwhoseheadseemedfamiliartoPrinceAndrew:theywereliftinghimupandtryingtoquiethim.

           “Showittome....Oh,ooh...Oh!Oh,ooh!”hisfrightenedmoanscouldbeheard,subduedbysufferingandbrokenbysobs.

           HearingthosemoansPrinceAndrewwantedtoweep.Whetherbecausehewasdyingwithoutglory,orbecausehewassorrytopartwithlife,orbecauseofthosememoriesofachildhoodthatcouldnotreturn,orbecausehewassufferingandothersweresufferingandthatmannearhimwasgroaningsopiteously—hefeltlikeweepingchildlike,kindly,andalmosthappytears.

           Thewoundedmanwasshownhisamputatedlegstainedwithclottedbloodandwiththebootstillon.

           “Oh!Oh,ooh!”hesobbed,likeawoman.
