           InthecentertheFrenchhadnotgotbeyondBorodinó,andontheirleftflankUvárov’scavalryhadputtheFrenchtoflight.

           Towardthreeo’clocktheFrenchattacksceased.Onthefacesofallwhocamefromthefieldofbattle,andofthosewhostoodaroundhim,Kutúzovnoticedanexpressionofextremetension.Hewassatisfiedwiththeday’ssuccess—asuccessexceedinghisexpectations,buttheoldman’sstrengthwasfailinghim.Severaltimeshisheaddroppedlowasifitwerefallingandhedozedoff.Dinnerwasbroughthim.
