           ButtheFrenchofficerwasevidentlymoreinclinedtothinkhehadbeentakenprisonerbecausePierre’sstronghand,impelledbyinstinctivefear,squeezedhisthroatevertighterandtighter.TheFrenchmanwasabouttosaysomething,whenjustabovetheirheads,terribleandlow,acannonballwhistled,anditseemedtoPierrethattheFrenchofficer’sheadhadbeentornoff,soswiftlyhadheduckedit.

           TheFrenchwhohadoccupiedthebatteryfled,andourtroopsshouting“Hurrah!”pursuedthemsofarbeyondthebatterythatitwasdifficulttocallthemback.

           TheprisonerswerebroughtdownfromthebatteryandamongthemwasawoundedFrenchgeneral,whomtheofficerssurrounded.Crowdsofwounded—someknowntoPierreandsomeunknown—RussiansandFrench,withfacesdistortedbysuffering,walked,crawled,andwerecarriedonstretchersfromthebattery
