           “Sothisgruelisn’ttoyourtaste?Oh,youcrows!You’rescared!”theyshoutedatthemilitiamenwhostoodhesitatingbeforethemanwhoseleghadbeentornoff.

           “There,lads...oh,oh!”theymimickedthepeasants,“theydon’tlikeitatall!”

           Pierrenoticedthataftereveryballthathittheredoubt,andaftereveryloss,thelivelinessincreasedmoreandmore.
