           Behind,before,andonbothsides,crowdsofmilitiamenwithbaredheadswalked,ran,andbowedtotheground.

           Atthesummitofthehilltheystoppedwiththeicon;themenwhohadbeenholdingitupbythelinenbandsattachedtoitwererelievedbyothers,thechantersrelittheircensers,andservicebegan.Thehotraysofthesunbeatdownverticallyandafreshsoftwindplayedwiththehairofthebaredheadsandwiththeribbonsdecoratingtheicon.Thesingingdidnotsoundloudundertheopensky.Animmensecrowdofbareheadedofficers,soldiers,andmilitiamensurroundedtheicon.Behindthepriestandachanterstoodthenotabilitiesonaspotreservedforthem.AbaldgeneralwithaSt.George’sCrossonhisneckstoodjustbehindthepriest’sback,andwithoutcrossinghimself(hewasevidentlyaGerman)patientlyawaitedtheendoftheservice,whichheconsidereditnecessarytoheartotheend,probablytoarousethepatriotismoftheRussianpeople.Anothergeneralstoodinamartialpose,crossinghimselfbyshakinghishandinfrontofhischestwhilelookingabouthim.Standingamongthecrowdofpeasants,Pierrerecognizedseveralacquaintancesamongthesenotables,butdidnotlookatthem—hiswholeattentionwasabsorbedinwatchingtheseriousexpressiononthefacesofthecrowdofsoldiersandmilitiamenwhowereallgazingeagerlyattheicon.
