           AnnaMikháylovna,addressingamaidwhowashurryingpastwithadecanteronatrayas“mydear”and“mysweet,”askedabouttheprincess’healthandthenledPierrealongastonepassage.Thefirstdoorontheleftledintotheprincesses’apartments.Themaidwiththedecanterinherhastehadnotclosedthedoor(everythinginthehousewasdoneinhasteatthattime),andPierreandAnnaMikháylovnainpassinginstinctivelyglancedintotheroom,wherePrinceVasíliandtheeldestprincessweresittingclosetogethertalking.Seeingthempass,PrinceVasílidrewbackwithobviousimpatience,whiletheprincessjumpedupandwithagestureofdesperationslammedthedoorwithallhermight.

           ThisactionwassounlikeherusualcomposureandthefeardepictedonPrinceVasíli’sfacesooutofkeepingwithhisdignitythatPierrestoppedandglancedinquiringlyoverhisspectaclesathisguide.AnnaMikháylovnaevincednosurprise,sheonlysmiledfaintlyandsighed,asiftosaythatthiswasnomorethanshehadexpected.

           “Beaman,myfriend.Iwilllookafteryourinterests,”saidsheinreplytohislook,andwentstillfasteralongthepassage.

           Pierrecouldnotmakeoutwhatitwasallabout,andstilllesswhat“watchingoverhisinterests”meant,buthedecidedthatallthesethingshadtobe.Fromthepassagetheywentintoalarge,dimlylitroomadjoiningthecount’sreceptionroom.ItwasoneofthosesumptuousbutcoldapartmentsknowntoPierreonlyfromthefrontapproach,buteveninthisroomtherenowstoodanemptybath,andwaterhadbeenspilledonthecarpet.
