           ThelatterwasveryattentivetoAnnaPávlovnabecausehewantedtobeappointeddirectorofoneoftheeducationalestablishmentsforyoungladies.PrinceVasílienteredtheroomwiththeairofahappyconquerorwhohasattainedtheobjectofhisdesires.

           “Well,haveyouheardthegreatnews?PrinceKutúzovisfieldmarshal!Alldissensionsareatanend!Iamsoglad,sodelighted!Atlastwehaveaman!”saidhe,glancingsternlyandsignificantlyroundateveryoneinthedrawingroom.

           The“manofgreatmerit,”despitehisdesiretoobtainthepostofdirector,couldnotrefrainfromremindingPrinceVasíliofhisformeropinion.ThoughthiswasimpolitetoPrinceVasíliinAnnaPávlovna’sdrawingroom,andalsotoAnnaPávlovnaherselfwhohadreceivedthenewswithdelight,hecouldnotresistthetemptation.

           “But,Prince,theysayheisblind!”saidhe,remindingPrinceVasíliofhisownwords.

           “Eh?Nonsense!Heseeswellenough,”saidPrinceVasílirapidly,inadeepvoiceandwithaslightcough—thevoiceandcoughwithwhichhewaswonttodisposeofalldifficulties.

           “Heseeswellenough,”headded.“AndwhatIamsopleasedabout,”hewenton,“isthatoursovereignhasgivenhimfullpowersoverallthearmiesandthewholeregion—powersnocommanderinchiefeverhadbefore.Heisasecondautocrat,”heconcludedwithavictorioussmile.

           “Godgrantit!Godgrantit!”saidAnnaPávlovna.
