           Therewasnowind,andthemenchokedinthatmotionlessatmosphere.Theymarchedwithhandkerchiefstiedovertheirnosesandmouths.Whentheypassedthroughavillagetheyallrushedtothewellsandfoughtforthewateranddrankitdowntothemud.

           PrinceAndrewwasincommandofaregiment,andthemanagementofthatregiment,thewelfareofthemenandthenecessityofreceivingandgivingorders,engrossedhim.TheburningofSmolénskanditsabandonmentmadeanepochinhislife.Anovelfeelingofangeragainstthefoemadehimforgethisownsorrow.Hewasentirelydevotedtotheaffairsofhisregimentandwasconsiderateandkindtohismenandofficers.Intheregimenttheycalledhim“ourprince,”wereproudofhimandlovedhim.Buthewaskindandgentleonlytothoseofhisregiment,toTimókhinandthelike—peoplequitenewtohim,belongingtoadifferentworldandwhocouldnotknowandunderstandhispast.Assoonashecameacrossaformeracquaintanceoranyonefromthestaff,hebristledupimmediatelyandgrewspiteful,ironical,andcontemptuous.Everythingthatremindedhimofhispastwasrepugnanttohim,andsoinhisrelationswiththatformercircleheconfinedhimselftotryingtodohisdutyandnottobeunfair.

           IntrutheverythingpresenteditselfinadarkandgloomylighttoPrinceAndrew,especiallyaftertheabandonmentofSmolénskonthesixthofAugust(heconsideredthatitcouldandshouldhavebeendefended)andafterhissickfatherhadhadtofleetoMoscow,abandoningtopillagehisdearlybelovedBaldHillswhichhehadbuiltandpeopled.
