           SothoughttheEmperor,andtheRussiancommandersandpeoplewerestillmoreprovokedatthethoughtthatourforceswereretreatingintothedepthsofthecountry.

           Napoleonhavingcutourarmiesapartadvancedfarintothecountryandmissedseveralchancesofforcinganengagement.InAugusthewasatSmolénskandthoughtonlyofhowtoadvancefarther,thoughaswenowseethatadvancewasevidentlyruinoustohim.

           ThefactsclearlyshowthatNapoleondidnotforeseethedangeroftheadvanceonMoscow,nordidAlexanderandtheRussiancommandersthenthinkofluringNapoleonon,butquitethecontrary.
