           Butinspiteofthishecontinuedtostruggledesperatelyforward,andfrombetweenthebacksofthoseinfronthecaughtglimpsesofanopenspacewithastripofredclothspreadoutonit;butjustthenthecrowdswayedback—thepoliceinfrontwerepushingbackthosewhohadpressedtooclosetotheprocession:theEmperorwaspassingfromthepalacetotheCathedraloftheAssumption—andPétyaunexpectedlyreceivedsuchablowonhissideandribsandwassqueezedsohardthatsuddenlyeverythinggrewdimbeforehiseyesandhelostconsciousness.Whenhecametohimself,amanofclericalappearancewithatuftofgrayhairatthebackofhisheadandwearingashabbybluecassock—probablyachurchclerkandchanter—washoldinghimunderthearmwithonehandwhilewardingoffthepressureofthecrowdwiththeother.

           TheEmperorenteredtheCathedraloftheAssumption.Thecrowdspreadoutagainmoreevenly,andtheclerkledPétya—paleandbreathless—totheTsar-cannon.SeveralpeopleweresorryforPétya,andsuddenlyacrowdturnedtowardhimandpressedroundhim.Thosewhostoodnearesthimattendedtohim,unbuttonedhiscoat,seatedhimontheraisedplatformofthecannon,andreproachedthoseothers(whoevertheymightbe)whohadcrushedhim.

           “Onemighteasilygetkilledthatway!Whatdotheymeanbyit?Killingpeople!Poordear,he’saswhiteasasheet!”—variousvoiceswereheardsaying.
