           Pfuelbarelyglanced—notsomuchatPrinceAndrewaspasthim—andsaid,withalaugh:“Thatmusthavebeenafinetacticalwar”;and,laughingcontemptuously,wentonintotheroomfromwhichthesoundofvoiceswasheard.

           Pfuel,alwaysinclinedtobeirritablysarcastic,wasparticularlydisturbedthatday,evidentlybythefactthattheyhaddaredtoinspectandcriticizehiscampinhisabsence.FromthisshortinterviewwithPfuel,PrinceAndrew,thankstohisAusterlitzexperiences,wasabletoformaclearconceptionoftheman.Pfuelwasoneofthosehopelesslyandimmutablyself-confidentmen,self-confidenttothepointofmartyrdomasonlyGermansare,becauseonlyGermansareself-confidentonthebasisofanabstractnotion—science,thatis,thesupposedknowledgeofabsolutetruth.AFrenchmanisself-assuredbecauseheregardshimselfpersonally,bothinmindandbody,asirresistiblyattractivetomenandwomen.AnEnglishmanisself-assured,asbeingacitizenofthebest-organizedstateintheworld,andthereforeasanEnglishmanalwaysknowswhatheshoulddoandknowsthatallhedoesasanEnglishmanisundoubtedlycorrect.AnItalianisself-assuredbecauseheisexcitableandeasilyforgetshimselfandotherpeople.ARussianisself-assuredjustbecauseheknowsnothinganddoesnotwanttoknowanything,sincehedoesnotbelievethatanythingcanbeknown.TheGerman’sself-assuranceisworstofall,strongerandmorerepulsivethananyother,becauseheimaginesthatheknowsthetruth—science—whichhehimselfhasinventedbutwhichisforhimtheabsolutetruth.
