           WhenBalashëvhadended,Napoleonagaintookouthissnuffbox,sniffedatit,andstampedhisfoottwiceonthefloorasasignal.Thedooropened,agentleman-in-waiting,bendingrespectfully,handedtheEmperorhishatandgloves;anotherbroughthimapockethandkerchief.Napoleon,withoutgivingthemaglance,turnedtoBalashëv:

           “AssuretheEmperorAlexanderfromme,”saidhe,takinghishat,“thatIamasdevotedtohimasbefore:Iknowhimthoroughlyandveryhighlyesteemhisloftyqualities.Iwilldetainyounolonger,General;youshallreceivemylettertotheEmperor.”

           AndNapoleonwentquicklytothedoor.Everyoneinthereceptionroomrushedforwardanddescendedthestaircase.
