           ButtheEmperorandBalashëvpassedoutintotheilluminatedgardenwithoutnoticingArakchéevwho,holdinghisswordandglancingwrathfullyaround,followedsometwentypacesbehindthem.

           AllthetimeBoríswasgoingthroughthefiguresofthemazurka,hewasworriedbythequestionofwhatnewsBalashëvhadbroughtandhowhecouldfinditoutbeforeothers.Inthefigureinwhichhehadtochoosetwoladies,hewhisperedtoHélènethathemeanttochooseCountessPotockawho,hethought,hadgoneoutontotheveranda,andglidedovertheparquettothedooropeningintothegarden,where,seeingBalashëvandtheEmperorreturningtotheveranda,hestoodstill.Theyweremovingtowardthedoor.Borís,flutteringasifhehadnothadtimetowithdraw,respectfullypressedclosetothedoorpostwithbowedhead.

           TheEmperor,withtheagitationofonewhohasbeenpersonallyaffronted,wasfinishingwiththesewords:

           “ToenterRussiawithoutdeclaringwar!Iwillnotmakepeaceaslongasasinglearmedenemyremainsinmycountry!”ItseemedtoBorísthatitgavetheEmperorpleasuretoutterthesewords.Hewassatisfiedwiththeforminwhichhehadexpressedhisthoughts,butdispleasedthatBoríshadoverheardit.

           “Letnooneknowofit!”theEmperoraddedwithafrown.

           Borísunderstoodthatthiswasmeantforhimand,closinghiseyes,slightlybowedhishead.TheEmperorre-enteredtheballroomandremainedthereaboutanotherhalf-hour.
