           “Vivat!”shoutedthePoles,ecstatically,breakingtheirranksandpressingagainstoneanothertoseehim.

           Napoleonlookedupanddowntheriver,dismounted,andsatdownonalogthatlayonthebank.Atamutesignfromhim,atelescopewashandedhimwhichherestedonthebackofahappypagewhohadrunuptohim,andhegazedattheoppositebank.Thenhebecameabsorbedinamaplaidoutonthelogs.Withoutliftinghisheadhesaidsomething,andtwoofhisaides-de-campgallopedofftothePolishUhlans.

           “What?Whatdidhesay?”washeardintheranksofthePolishUhlanswhenoneoftheaides-de-camprodeuptothem.

           Assoonastheaide-de-camphadsaidthis,theoldmustachedofficer,withhappyfaceandsparklingeyes,raisedhissaber,shouted“Vivat!”and,commandingtheUhlanstofollowhim,spurredhishorseandgallopedintotheriver.Hegaveanangrythrusttohishorse,whichhadgrownrestiveunderhim,andplungedintothewater,headingforthedeepestpartwherethecurrentwasswift.HundredsofUhlansgallopedinafterhim.
