           WhenPierrereturnedhomeaftervainlyhuntingalloverMoscow,hisvaletinformedhimthatPrinceAnatolewaswiththecountess.Thecountess’drawingroomwasfullofguests.

           Pierrewithoutgreetinghiswifewhomhehadnotseensincehisreturn—atthatmomentshewasmorerepulsivetohimthanever—enteredthedrawingroomandseeingAnatolewentuptohim.

           “Ah,Pierre,”saidthecountessgoinguptoherhusband.“Youdon’tknowwhataplightourAnatole...”

           Shestopped,seeingintheforwardthrustofherhusband’shead,inhisglowingeyesandhisresolutegait,theterribleindicationsofthatrageandstrengthwhichsheknewandhadherselfexperiencedafterhisduelwithDólokhov.

           Anatoleglancedroundathissisterandrosesubmissively,readytofollowPierre.Pierre,takinghimbythearm,pulledhimtowardhimselfandwasleadinghimfromtheroom.

           Anatolefollowedhimwithhisusualjauntystepbuthisfacebetrayedanxiety.

           HavingenteredhisstudyPierreclosedthedoorandaddressedAnatolewithoutlookingathim.

           “YoupromisedCountessRostóvatomarryherandwereabouttoelopewithher,isthatso?”

           “Moncher,”answeredAnatole(theirwholeconversationwasinFrench),“Idon’tconsidermyselfboundtoanswerquestionsputtomeinthattone.”

           Pierre’sface,alreadypale,becamedistortedbyfury.
