           VronskyandAnnahadbeentravelingforthreemonthstogetherinEurope.TheyhadvisitedVenice,Rome,andNaples,andhadjustarrivedatasmallItaliantownwheretheymeanttostaysometime.Ahandsomeheadwaiter,withthickpomadedhairpartedfromtheneckupwards,aneveningcoat,abroadwhitecambricshirtfront,andabunchoftrinketshangingabovehisroundedstomach,stoodwithhishandsinthefullcurveofhispockets,lookingcontemptuouslyfromunderhiseyelidswhilehegavesomefrigidreplytoagentlemanwhohadstoppedhim.Catchingthesoundoffootstepscomingfromtheothersideoftheentrytowardsthestaircase,theheadwaiterturnedround,andseeingtheRussiancount,whohadtakentheirbestrooms,hetookhishandsoutofhispocketsdeferentially,andwithabowinformedhimthatacourierhadbeen,andthatthebusinessaboutthepalazzohadbeenarranged.Thestewardwaspreparedtosigntheagreement.

           “Ah!I’mgladtohearit,”saidVronsky.“Ismadameathomeornot?”

           “Madamehasbeenoutforawalkbuthasreturnednow,”answeredthewaiter.

           Vronskytookoffhissoft,wide-brimmedhatandpassedhishandkerchiefoverhisheatedbrowandhair,whichhadgrownhalfoverhisears,andwasbrushedbackcoveringthebaldpatchonhishead.Andglancingcasuallyatthegentleman,whostillstoodtheregazingintentlyathim,hewouldhavegoneon.

           “ThisgentlemanisaRussian,andwasinquiringafteryou,”saidtheheadwaiter.
