           Levinreachedtheclubjustattherighttime.Membersandvisitorsweredrivingupashearrived.LevinhadnotbeenattheclubforaverylongwhilenotsincehelivedinMoscow,whenhewasleavingtheuniversityandgoingintosociety.Herememberedtheclub,theexternaldetailsofitsarrangement,buthehadcompletelyforgottentheimpressionithadmadeonhiminolddays.Butassoonas,drivingintothewidesemicircularcourtandgettingoutofthesledge,hemountedthesteps,andthehall-porter,adornedwithacrosswayscarf,noiselesslyopenedthedoortohimwithabow;assoonashesawintheporter’sroomthecloaksandgaloshesofmemberswhothoughtitlesstroubletotakethemoffdownstairs;assoonasheheardthemysteriousringingbellthatprecededhimasheascendedtheeasy,carpetedstaircase,andsawthestatueonthelanding,andthethirdporteratthetopdoors,afamiliarfiguregrownolder,intheclublivery,openingthedoorwithouthasteordelay,andscanningthevisitorsastheypassedinLevinfelttheoldimpressionoftheclubcomebackinarush,animpressionofrepose,comfort,andpropriety.

           “Yourhat,please,”theportersaidtoLevin,whoforgottheclubruletoleavehishatintheporter’sroom.“Longtimesinceyou’vebeen.Theprinceputyournamedownyesterday.PrinceStepanArkadyevitchisnothereyet.”

           TheporterdidnotonlyknowLevin,butalsoallhistiesandrelationships,andsoimmediatelymentionedhisintimatefriends.
