           TheLevinshadbeenthreemonthsinMoscow.Thedatehadlongpassedonwhich,accordingtothemosttrustworthycalculationsofpeoplelearnedinsuchmatters,Kittyshouldhavebeenconfined.Butshewasstillabout,andtherewasnothingtoshowthathertimewasanynearerthantwomonthsago.Thedoctor,themonthlynurse,andDollyandhermother,andmostofallLevin,whocouldnotthinkoftheapproachingeventwithoutterror,begantobeimpatientanduneasy.Kittywastheonlypersonwhofeltperfectlycalmandhappy.

           Shewasdistinctlyconsciousnowofthebirthofanewfeelingofloveforthefuturechild,forhertosomeextentactuallyexistingalready,andshebroodedblissfullyoverthisfeeling.Hewasnotbynowaltogetherapartofherself,butsometimeslivedhisownlifeindependentlyofher.Oftenthisseparatebeinggaveherpain,butatthesametimeshewantedtolaughwithastrangenewjoy.

           Allthepeopleshelovedwerewithher,andallweresogoodtoher,soattentivelycaringforher,soentirelypleasantwaseverythingpresentedtoher,thatifshehadnotknownandfeltthatitmustallsoonbeover,shecouldnothavewishedforabetterandpleasanterlife.Theonlythingthatspoiledthecharmofthismanneroflifewasthatherhusbandwasnothereasshelovedhimtobe,andashewasinthecountry.

           Shelikedhisserene,friendly,andhospitablemannerinthecountry.Inthetownheseemedcontinuallyuneasyandonhisguard,asthoughhewereafraidsomeonewouldberudetohim,andstillmoretoher.
