           Eversince,byhisbelovedbrother’sdeathbed,Levinhadfirstglancedintothequestionsoflifeanddeathinthelightofthesenewconvictions,ashecalledthem,whichhadduringtheperiodfromhistwentiethtohisthirty-fourthyearimperceptiblyreplacedhischildishandyouthfulbeliefshehadbeenstrickenwithhorror,notsomuchofdeath,asoflife,withoutanyknowledgeofwhence,andwhy,andhow,andwhatitwas.Thephysicalorganization,itsdecay,theindestructibilityofmatter,thelawoftheconservationofenergy,evolution,werethewordswhichusurpedtheplaceofhisoldbelief.Thesewordsandtheideasassociatedwiththemwereverywellforintellectualpurposes.Butforlifetheyyieldednothing,andLevinfeltsuddenlylikeamanwhohaschangedhiswarmfurcloakforamuslingarment,andgoingforthefirsttimeintothefrostisimmediatelyconvinced,notbyreason,butbyhiswholenaturethatheisasgoodasnaked,andthathemustinfalliblyperishmiserably.

           Fromthatmoment,thoughhedidnotdistinctlyfaceit,andstillwentonlivingasbefore,Levinhadneverlostthissenseofterrorathislackofknowledge.

           Hevaguelyfelt,too,thatwhathecalledhisnewconvictionswerenotmerelylackofknowledge,butthattheywerepartofawholeorderofideas,inwhichnoknowledgeofwhatheneededwaspossible.

           Atfirst,marriage,withthenewjoysanddutiesboundupwithit,hadcompletelycrowdedoutthesethoughts.
