           ThehoteloftheprovincialtownwhereNikolayLevinwaslyingillwasoneofthoseprovincialhotelswhichareconstructedonthenewestmodelofmodernimprovements,withthebestintentionsofcleanliness,comfort,andevenelegance,butowingtothepublicthatpatronizesthem,arewithastoundingrapiditytransformedintofilthytavernswithapretensionofmodernimprovementthatonlymakesthemworsethantheold-fashioned,honestlyfilthyhotels.Thishotelhadalreadyreachedthatstage,andthesoldierinafilthyuniformsmokingintheentry,supposedtostandforahall-porter,andthecast-iron,slippery,dark,anddisagreeablestaircase,andthefreeandeasywaiterinafilthyfrockcoat,andthecommondining-roomwithadustybouquetofwaxflowersadorningthetable,andfilth,dust,anddisordereverywhere,andatthesametimethesortofmodernup-to-dateself-complacentrailwayuneasinessofthishotel,arousedamostpainfulfeelinginLevinaftertheirfreshyounglife,especiallybecausetheimpressionoffalsitymadebythehotelwassooutofkeepingwithwhatawaitedthem.

           Asisinvariablythecase,aftertheyhadbeenaskedatwhatpricetheywantedrooms,itappearedthattherewasnotonedecentroomforthem;onedecentroomhadbeentakenbytheinspectorofrailroads,anotherbyalawyerfromMoscow,athirdbyPrincessAstafievafromthecountry.Thereremainedonlyonefilthyroom,nexttowhichtheypromisedthatanothershouldbeemptybytheevening.
