           InspiteofVronsky’sapparentlyfrivolouslifeinsociety,hewasamanwhohatedirregularity.InearlyyouthintheCorpsofPages,hehadexperiencedthehumiliationofarefusal,whenhehadtried,beingindifficulties,toborrowmoney,andsincethenhehadneveronceputhimselfinthesamepositionagain.

           Inordertokeephisaffairsinsomesortoforder,heusedaboutfivetimesayear(moreorlessfrequently,accordingtocircumstances)toshuthimselfupaloneandputallhisaffairsintodefiniteshape.Thisheusedtocallhisdayofreckoningorfairelalessive.

           Onwakingupthedayaftertheraces,Vronskyputonawhitelinencoat,andwithoutshavingortakinghisbath,hedistributedaboutthetablemoneys,bills,andletters,andsettowork.Petritsky,whoknewhewasill-temperedonsuchoccasions,onwakingupandseeinghiscomradeatthewriting-table,quietlydressedandwentoutwithoutgettinginhisway.

           Everymanwhoknowstotheminutestdetailsallthecomplexityoftheconditionssurroundinghim,cannothelpimaginingthatthecomplexityoftheseconditions,andthedifficultyofmakingthemclear,issomethingexceptionalandpersonal,peculiartohimself,andneversupposesthatothersaresurroundedbyjustascomplicatedanarrayofpersonalaffairsasheis.SoindeeditseemedtoVronsky.Andnotwithoutinwardpride,andnotwithoutreason,hethoughtthatanyothermanwouldlongagohavebeenindifficulties,wouldhavebeenforcedtosomedishonorablecourse,ifhehadfoundhimselfinsuchadifficultposition.
