           ButthemorehelistenedtothefantasiaofKingLearthefurtherhefeltfromforminganydefiniteopinionofit.Therewas,asitwere,acontinualbeginning,apreparationofthemusicalexpressionofsomefeeling,butitfelltopiecesagaindirectly,breakingintonewmusicalmotives,orsimplynothingbutthewhimsofthecomposer,exceedinglycomplexbutdisconnectedsounds.Andthesefragmentarymusicalexpressions,thoughsometimesbeautiful,weredisagreeable,becausetheywereutterlyunexpectedandnotleduptobyanything.Gaietyandgriefanddespairandtendernessandtriumphfollowedoneanotherwithoutanyconnection,liketheemotionsofamadman.Andthoseemotions,likeamadman’s,sprangupquiteunexpectedly.
