           Neverbeforehadadaybeenpassedinquarrel.Todaywasthefirsttime.Andthiswasnotaquarrel.Itwastheopenacknowledgmentofcompletecoldness.Wasitpossibletoglanceatherashehadglancedwhenhecameintotheroomfortheguarantee?tolookather,seeherheartwasbreakingwithdespair,andgooutwithoutawordwiththatfaceofcallouscomposure?Hewasnotmerelycoldtoher,hehatedherbecausehelovedanotherwomanthatwasclear.
