           StepanArkadyevitchwentupstairswithhispocketbulgingwithnotes,whichthemerchanthadpaidhimforthreemonthsinadvance.Thebusinessoftheforestwasover,themoneyinhispocket;theirshootinghadbeenexcellent,andStepanArkadyevitchwasinthehappiestframeofmind,andsohefeltspeciallyanxioustodissipatetheill-humorthathadcomeuponLevin.Hewantedtofinishthedayatsupperaspleasantlyasithadbeenbegun.

           Levincertainlywasoutofhumor,andinspiteofallhisdesiretobeaffectionateandcordialtohischarmingvisitor,hecouldnotcontrolhismood.TheintoxicationofthenewsthatKittywasnotmarriedhadgraduallybeguntoworkuponhim.

           Kittywasnotmarried,butill,andillfromloveforamanwhohadslightedher.Thisslight,asitwere,reboundeduponhim.Vronskyhadslightedher,andshehadslightedhim,Levin.ConsequentlyVronskyhadtherighttodespiseLevin,andthereforehewashisenemy.ButallthisLevindidnotthinkout.Hevaguelyfeltthattherewassomethinginitinsultingtohim,andhewasnotangrynowatwhathaddisturbedhim,buthefellfoulofeverythingthatpresenteditself.Thestupidsaleoftheforest,thefraudpracticeduponOblonskyandconcludedinhishouse,exasperatedhim.

           “Well,finished?”hesaid,meetingStepanArkadyevitchupstairs.“Wouldyoulikesupper?”

           “Well,Iwouldn’tsaynotoit.WhatanappetiteIgetinthecountry!Wonderful!Whydidn’tyouofferRyabininsomething?”

           “Oh,damnhim!”
