           Levinhadlongbeforemadetheobservationthatwhenoneisuncomfortablewithpeoplefromtheirbeingexcessivelyamenableandmeek,oneisaptverysoonaftertofindthingsintolerablefromtheirtouchinessandirritability.Hefeltthatthiswashowitwouldbewithhisbrother.AndhisbrotherNikolay’sgentlenessdidinfactnotlastoutforlong.Theverynextmorninghebegantobeirritable,andseemeddoinghisbesttofindfaultwithhisbrother,attackinghimonhistenderestpoints.

           ThethirddayNikolayinducedhisbrothertoexplainhisplantohimagain,andbegannotmerelyattackingit,butintentionallyconfoundingitwithcommunism.
