           Afterdinner,andtillthebeginningoftheevening,Kittywasfeelingasensationakintothesensationofayoungmanbeforeabattle.Herheartthrobbedviolently,andherthoughtswouldnotrestonanything.

           Shefeltthatthisevening,whentheywouldbothmeetforthefirsttime,wouldbeaturningpointinherlife.Andshewascontinuallypicturingthemtoherself,atonemomenteachseparately,andthenbothtogether.Whenshemusedonthepast,shedweltwithpleasure,withtenderness,onthememoriesofherrelationswithLevin.ThememoriesofchildhoodandofLevin’sfriendshipwithherdeadbrothergaveaspecialpoeticcharmtoherrelationswithhim.Hisloveforher,ofwhichshefeltcertain,wasflatteringanddelightfultoher;anditwaspleasantforhertothinkofLevin.InhermemoriesofVronskytherealwaysenteredacertainelementofawkwardness,thoughhewasinthehighestdegreewell-bredandatease,asthoughthereweresomefalsenotenotinVronsky,hewasverysimpleandnice,butinherself,whilewithLevinshefeltperfectlysimpleandclear.But,ontheotherhand,directlyshethoughtofthefuturewithVronsky,therearosebeforeheraperspectiveofbrillianthappiness;withLevinthefutureseemedmisty.

           Whenshewentupstairstodress,andlookedintothelooking-glass,shenoticedwithjoythatitwasoneofhergooddays,andthatshewasincompletepossessionofallherforces,sheneededthissoforwhatlaybeforeher:shewasconsciousofexternalcomposureandfreegraceinhermovements.
