           AttheendofSeptemberthetimberhadbeencartedforbuildingthecattleyardonthelandthathadbeenallottedtotheassociationofpeasants,andthebutterfromthecowswassoldandtheprofitsdivided.Inpracticethesystemworkedcapitally,or,atleast,soitseemedtoLevin.Inordertoworkoutthewholesubjecttheoreticallyandtocompletehisbook,which,inLevin’sdaydreams,wasnotmerelytoeffectarevolutioninpoliticaleconomy,buttoannihilatethatscienceentirelyandtolaythefoundationofanewscienceoftherelationofthepeopletothesoil,allthatwaslefttodowastomakeatourabroad,andtostudyonthespotallthathadbeendoneinthesamedirection,andtocollectconclusiveevidencethatallthathadbeendonetherewasnotwhatwaswanted.Levinwasonlywaitingforthedeliveryofhiswheattoreceivethemoneyforitandgoabroad.Buttherainsbegan,preventingtheharvestingofthecornandpotatoesleftinthefields,andputtingastoptoallwork,eventothedeliveryofthewheat.

           Themudwasimpassablealongtheroads;twomillswerecarriedaway,andtheweathergotworseandworse.

           Onthe30thofSeptemberthesuncameoutinthemorning,andhopingforfineweather,Levinbeganmakingfinalpreparationsforhisjourney.Hegaveordersforthewheattobedelivered,sentthebailifftothemerchanttogetthemoneyowinghim,andwentouthimselftogivesomefinaldirectionsontheestatebeforesettingoff.
