           Toreapandbindtheryeandoatsandtocarryit,tomowthemeadows,turnoverthefallows,thrashtheseedandsowthewintercornallthisseemssosimpleandordinary;buttosucceedingettingthroughitalleveryoneinthevillage,fromtheoldmantotheyoungchild,musttoilincessantlyforthreeorfourweeks,threetimesashardasusual,livingonrye-beer,onions,andblackbread,thrashingandcarryingthesheavesatnight,andnotgivingmorethantwoorthreehoursinthetwenty-fourtosleep.AndeveryyearthisisdonealloverRussia.

           Havinglivedthegreaterpartofhislifeinthecountryandintheclosestrelationswiththepeasants,Levinalwaysfeltinthisbusytimethathewasinfectedbythisgeneralquickeningofenergyinthepeople.

           Intheearlymorningherodeovertothefirstsowingoftherye,andtotheoats,whichwerebeingcarriedtothestacks,andreturninghomeatthetimehiswifeandsister-in-lawweregettingup,hedrankcoffeewiththemandwalkedtothefarm,whereanewthrashingmachinewastobesetworkingtogetreadytheseed-corn.
