           WhenAlexeyAlexandrovitchreachedtherace-course,AnnawasalreadysittinginthepavilionbesideBetsy,inthatpavilionwhereallthehighestsocietyhadgathered.Shecaughtsightofherhusbandinthedistance.Twomen,herhusbandandherlover,werethetwocentersofherexistence,andunaidedbyherexternalsensesshewasawareoftheirnearness.Shewasawareofherhusbandapproachingalongwayoff,andshecouldnothelpfollowinghiminthesurgingcrowdinthemidstofwhichhewasmoving.Shewatchedhisprogresstowardsthepavilion,sawhimnowrespondingcondescendinglytoaningratiatingbow,nowexchangingfriendly,nonchalantgreetingswithhisequals,nowassiduouslytryingtocatchtheeyeofsomegreatoneofthisworld,andtakingoffhisbigroundhatthatsqueezedthetipsofhisears.Allthesewaysofhissheknew,andallwerehatefultoher.“Nothingbutambition,nothingbutthedesiretogeton,that’sallthereisinhissoul,”shethought;“asfortheseloftyideals,loveofculture,religion,theyareonlysomanytoolsforgettingon.”

           Fromhisglancestowardstheladies’pavilion(hewasstaringstraightather,butdidnotdistinguishhiswifeintheseaofmuslin,ribbons,feathers,parasolsandflowers)shesawthathewaslookingforher,butshepurposelyavoidednoticinghim.

           “AlexeyAlexandrovitch!”PrincessBetsycalledtohim;“I’msureyoudon’tseeyourwife:heresheis.”

           Hesmiledhischillysmile.
