           ThenightspentbyLevinonthehaycockdidnotpasswithoutresultforhim.Thewayinwhichhehadbeenmanaginghislandrevoltedhimandhadlostallattractionforhim.Inspiteofthemagnificentharvest,neverhadtherebeen,or,atleast,neveritseemedtohim,hadtherebeensomanyhindrancesandsomanyquarrelsbetweenhimandthepeasantsasthatyear,andtheoriginofthesefailuresandthishostilitywasnowperfectlycomprehensibletohim.Thedelighthehadexperiencedintheworkitself,andtheconsequentgreaterintimacywiththepeasants,theenvyhefeltofthem,oftheirlife,thedesiretoadoptthatlife,whichhadbeentohimthatnightnotadreambutanintention,theexecutionofwhichhehadthoughtoutindetailallthishadsotransformedhisviewofthefarmingofthelandashehadmanagedit,thathecouldnottakehisformerinterestinit,andcouldnothelpseeingthatunpleasantrelationbetweenhimandtheworkpeoplewhichwasthefoundationofitall.TheherdofimprovedcowssuchasPava,thewholelandploughedoverandenriched,theninelevelfieldssurroundedwithhedges,thetwohundredandfortyacresheavilymanured,theseedsownindrills,andalltherestofititwasallsplendidifonlytheworkhadbeendoneforthemselves,orforthemselvesandcomradespeopleinsympathywiththem.
