           Itwaspastfive,andseveralguestshadalreadyarrived,beforethehosthimselfgothome.HewentintogetherwithSergeyIvanovitchKoznishevandPestsov,whohadreachedthestreetdooratthesamemoment.ThesewerethetwoleadingrepresentativesoftheMoscowintellectuals,asOblonskyhadcalledthem.Bothweremenrespectedfortheircharacterandtheirintelligence.Theyrespectedeachother,butwereincompleteandhopelessdisagreementuponalmosteverysubject,notbecausetheybelongedtooppositeparties,butpreciselybecausetheywereofthesameparty(theirenemiesrefusedtoseeanydistinctionbetweentheirviews);but,inthatparty,eachhadhisownspecialshadeofopinion.Andsincenodifferenceislesseasilyovercomethanthedifferenceofopinionaboutsemi-abstractquestions,theyneveragreedinanyopinion,andhadlong,indeed,beenaccustomedtojeerwithoutanger,eachattheother’sincorrigibleaberrations.

           Theywerejustgoinginatthedoor,talkingoftheweather,whenStepanArkadyevitchovertookthem.Inthedrawing-roomtherewerealreadysittingPrinceAlexanderDmitrievitchShtcherbatsky,youngShtcherbatsky,Turovtsin,Kitty,andKarenin.
