           Vronsky’slifewasparticularlyhappyinthathehadacodeofprinciples,whichdefinedwithunfailingcertitudewhatheoughtandwhatheoughtnottodo.Thiscodeofprinciplescoveredonlyaverysmallcircleofcontingencies,butthentheprincipleswereneverdoubtful,andVronsky,asheneverwentoutsidethatcircle,hadneverhadamoment’shesitationaboutdoingwhatheoughttodo.Theseprincipleslaiddownasinvariablerules:thatonemustpayacardsharper,butneednotpayatailor;thatonemustnevertellalietoaman,butonemaytoawoman;thatonemustnevercheatanyone,butonemayahusband;thatonemustneverpardonaninsult,butonemaygiveoneandsoon.Theseprincipleswerepossiblynotreasonableandnotgood,buttheywereofunfailingcertainty,andsolongasheadheredtothem,Vronskyfeltthathisheartwasatpeaceandhecouldholdhisheadup.OnlyquitelatelyinregardtohisrelationswithAnna,Vronskyhadbeguntofeelthathiscodeofprinciplesdidnotfullycoverallpossiblecontingencies,andtoforeseeinthefuturedifficultiesandperplexitiesforwhichhecouldfindnoguidingclue.

           HispresentrelationtoAnnaandtoherhusbandwastohismindclearandsimple.Itwasclearlyandpreciselydefinedinthecodeofprinciplesbywhichhewasguided.

           Shewasanhonorablewomanwhohadbestowedherloveuponhim,andhelovedher,andthereforeshewasinhiseyesawomanwhohadarighttothesame,orevenmore,respectthanalawfulwife.
